MELBOURNE HIGH SCHOOLVCE Theatre Studies

VCE Theatre Studies Unit 1-4 is a combined MacRob and MHS performing arts subject. In the first half of the year the students produce a play from the script to the stage for an audience, taking on an acting and a design role. The students also attend two professional productions during the year and write analysis pieces about each one. The second half of the year is the development of a monologue to perform as part of the end of year exams. In 2021 the large cast of MacRob and MHS students put on the successful recontextualization of Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’.

Macbeth

The witches foretell great things for Macbeth and Banquo. King Duncan is to stay with Macbeth, as he has been crowned war hero. Lady Macbeth reads a letter from her husband, and concocts a plan to murder the King.
Macbeth murders King Duncan, but panics and leaves Lady Macbeth to finish the plan. The next morning the kings sons flee in order to stay alive, believing they will be next.
Macbeth sends thugs out to murder Banquo and his son, Fleance. Macbeth holds a banquet during which he sees the ghost of Banquo. Macbeth begins to rant and rave, while Lady Macbeth tries to salvage their image.
Macbeth becomes obsessed with power and asks the witches for more prophecies. Malcolm hatches a plan to kill Macbeth and become the rightful King.
Lady Macbeth begins to go insane, and kills herself. Macbeth continues fighting, believing the witches’ prophecies will protect him. He is then confronted by Macduff.
